Neon Trigger Devlog #4 – Weapons & Character Modeling

2025-06-15 by Hunter (stopicantaim)

Hey everyone! I’m Hunter, and I’ve been handling the 3D modeling for the weapons and main character in Neon Trigger. I wanted to share a bit about the work I’ve done so far and how I approached building these assets in Maya.

 Weapon Modeling

So far, I’ve made three weapons for the game: the shotgun, pistol, and assault rifle.

  • The shotgun was based directly on a concept sketch from our teammate James. I tried to follow the design pretty closely while keeping it clean and game-ready.

  • For the pistol, I pulled ideas from both real-world guns and sci-fi references. I looked at stuff like the Five-seveN and browsed Sketchfab for inspiration to help with the shape and feel.

  • The assault rifle was mainly inspired by classic sci-fi weapons like the Halo battle rifle. I wanted something that felt strong and techy without being too bulky.

I also kept the poly count low across all three so they'd run well in-game.

 Character Modeling

I also modeled the main character’s body, again using James’ concept art as the base. I tried to match the concept as closely as I could, but also made a few changes to help it animate better.

The biggest challenge was definitely the legs. I needed them to look robotic and stylized, but also work smoothly when rigged and animated. I looked at a bunch of sci-fi leg designs for reference and mixed a few ideas together.
